IF NOT TECH, WHAT WOULD I HAVE BEEN TODAY - NIGERIAN BLOGGER AND TECH LOVER (NWASIR AGUWA)

If Not Tech, What Would I Have Been Today?

Life is full of choices, chances, and crossroads. One single decision, one interest nurtured, one path followed can determine the entire shape of our destiny. For me, that path has been technology. It is the world where I have invested my time, energy, and imagination. It is the space that has given me relevance, income, identity, and a voice in the modern world. But I often ask myself: what if tech had not been my choice? What if the laptop, the codes, the digital space, and the startup culture were not part of my journey? What would I have been today?

This question is not just about curiosity; it is about gratitude and

reflection. It is about exploring how human potential is vast and how one seed of interest can redirect a person’s entire life. So, in this blog, I will explore the possible alternatives: the careers, passions, and lives I might have lived if technology had not been my chosen path. Along the way, I’ll share lessons about purpose, destiny, and the power of choice.

Why Technology?

Before imagining what else I might have been, it’s important to reflect on why tech became my path in the first place.

Technology attracted me because:

  1. It is creative – writing code, designing systems, or building digital tools is like art, only in another medium.

  2. It is impactful – technology shapes society in ways no other field does today.

  3. It is limitless – there are no boundaries; with just a laptop, internet, and skills, you can reach the world.

  4. It is rewarding – both financially and emotionally, technology gives back to those who master it.

But what if I had never discovered computers? What if I had ignored my first opportunity to learn coding, or never had internet access early enough? Life could have gone in many directions. Let us explore some of them.

1. The Teacher in Me

If not tech, I strongly believe I might have been a teacher. Teaching has always been close to my heart. From childhood, I enjoyed explaining things to my peers. I loved helping others understand difficult topics. That ability to break down complex ideas into simple forms is exactly what teaching requires.

Imagine me in a classroom, standing before curious young minds, not with slides and codes, but with chalk and marker, explaining mathematics, literature, or even history. Teaching is one of the noblest professions. Teachers shape destinies. If I had gone into teaching, I would have poured myself into it with passion.

But here’s the irony: even in tech, I still teach. Through mentorship, tutorials, and workshops, I still live out my teaching nature. So, maybe if not tech, I would still have become an educator—just in a different setting.

2. The Writer I Could Have Been

Words have always fascinated me. Even before tech, I had a love for storytelling. Writing gives me joy. If tech had not come, I may have pursued a career in writing—perhaps journalism, creative writing, or even becoming an author.

I imagine myself sitting in a quiet room, typing novels or investigative articles. Maybe I would be working for a magazine, traveling, interviewing people, and documenting human experiences. Writing allows a person to touch hearts, inspire minds, and shape public opinion.

Tech has not taken that away from me. In fact, here I am writing this blog. Writing and tech have become allies in my life. But without tech, writing might have been my first and only calling.

3. The Entrepreneur Without Tech

Entrepreneurship is in my blood. I like to solve problems and create value. Even if tech were not my tool, I believe I would still be in business. Maybe I would have gone into trading, agriculture, or real estate.

I might have been one of those street-smart entrepreneurs who identify opportunities in their communities and capitalize on them. For instance:

  • Running a farm and supplying food to cities.

  • Importing goods and building distribution channels.

  • Starting a school or vocational center.

The entrepreneurial spirit does not depend on technology alone; it is about mindset. I would have found a way to create wealth and opportunities.

4. The Lawyer I Dreamed Of

Another interesting possibility is law. Growing up, I admired lawyers for their courage, confidence, and ability to defend the voiceless. At some point, I actually imagined myself in a black gown, standing in court, quoting laws, and delivering strong arguments.

If not tech, I might have studied law and become a barrister. I would have specialized in human rights or constitutional law, fighting for justice and fairness. Even now, I see similarities between law and tech—both require logic, analysis, and problem-solving.

5. The Doctor Who Saves Lives

Like many children, I once dreamed of becoming a doctor. The idea of saving lives and being respected in society was attractive. If not tech, medicine might have been an alternative path.

But the truth is, medicine requires patience, sacrifice, and years of study. Would I have endured it? Maybe. My desire to impact lives could have driven me into healthcare. Perhaps I would be working in a hospital, or even leading campaigns for better public health.

6. The Artist or Musician in Me

Another part of me that people rarely know is my love for art and music. I enjoy creativity in all its forms. I may not be a professional singer or painter, but I value art deeply. If not tech, maybe I would have pursued music—becoming a performer, songwriter, or even a producer.

Art is freedom. Music especially has a way of connecting souls across boundaries. I can imagine myself traveling from city to city, performing on stages, or painting portraits that tell stories. My classmates then, in Our Lady's Comprehensive Secondary School, Umueleghele can bear me witness of this.

7. The Politician or Activist

Without tech, maybe I would have gone into politics or activism. I have always had a strong voice and passion for justice. Politics is another way to shape society and make an impact.

I might have become a youth leader, mobilizing communities, or even running for office. My voice could have been in newspapers, not blogs. My speeches might have been in town halls, not on Zoom.

Activism is about vision, courage, and influence—the same skills tech requires.

8. The Farmer Who Feeds Nations

Agriculture is one of the oldest and noblest professions. If tech had not taken my attention, I might have become a farmer. The truth is, farming is not just about food; it is about life.

Imagine me owning large hectares of land, growing crops, and raising livestock. Feeding hundreds, even thousands. Agriculture may not sound glamorous, but it is powerful. Nations rise and fall based on food security.

Who knows? Maybe I would have been a millionaire farmer exporting food abroad.

9. The Religious Leader

Faith has always played a role in my life. If not tech, I might have become a religious leader. A pastor, priest, or motivational speaker. My passion for teaching, writing, and inspiring others could have been channeled into ministry.

Standing on a pulpit, leading prayers, and guiding people spiritually is another fulfilling path. Tech is my current pulpit, but without it, maybe the church would have been. This I demonstrated in Abia State Senior Science School, Alayi and Alvan Ikoku Federal College Of Education,

 Owerri.

10. The Explorer

Deep within me, I have always had curiosity about the world. If not tech, I might have pursued a life of exploration—traveling, discovering cultures, and documenting my journeys. Maybe I would have been a traveler, photographer, or researcher.

Life as an explorer is about curiosity and storytelling—two things I still use in tech.

Lessons From These Alternatives

As I reflect on all these possibilities—teacher, writer, entrepreneur, lawyer, doctor, artist, politician, farmer, religious leader, explorer—I realize something important:

  1. Purpose is versatile. Even without tech, my core passion for impact, creativity, and problem-solving would have found expression.

  2. Skills are transferable. The ability to think, analyze, communicate, and lead is useful in any field.

  3. Choice matters. The decisions we make about career paths shape not only our lives but also the society we influence.

  4. Gratitude is key. I am grateful for tech, but I am also grateful that I have multiple dimensions of potential.

Why Tech Remains My Chosen Path

After imagining all these alternatives, I return to one conclusion: technology is still the best fit for me. It is the space where all my passions—teaching, writing, entrepreneurship, activism, and creativity—converge.

  • Through teaching, I share knowledge in tech.

  • Through writing, I create blogs and guides.

  • Through entrepreneurship, I build solutions.

  • Through activism, I push for digital inclusion.

  • Through creativity, I design and innovate.

Tech is not just my career; it is the platform where every other version of me can exist.

Final Reflection

Life is like a river with many branches. We flow in one direction, but there are always alternative paths we could have taken. If not tech, I might have been a teacher, writer, lawyer, doctor, artist, farmer, politician, or preacher. And in each of those paths, I would have found meaning.

But tech is where my story is written today. It is my chosen river. It has given me the stage to express every other talent I carry. And for that, I am grateful.

So, the question “If not tech, what would I have been today?” is not just hypothetical—it is a reminder that within us lies endless potential. We are not defined by one career or path. We are defined by our purpose, values, and impact.
